My 5 Favorite Tips: Functional Powder Room Edition
Does your powder room need to be multi-purpose? Perhaps it is next to your mudroom and laundry area, or maybe it is near bedrooms and includes a shower or bathtub. Let me share my favorite interior design tips for functional, fabulous, family-friendly powder rooms and bathrooms.
Tip #1: Create a Cohesive Theme
Let’s take a look at my project board for this lovely family + functional powder room:
This family powder room is across from the laundry room between the back entry and the kitchen of my clients’ home. Because of the close proximity, we tied in the color scheme of all the areas to be a cohesive wing of the house. Speaking of wings, I love the unexpected birds and leaves wallpaper—it was a request from my client and the understated nature print works so well here.
Tip #2: Sprinkle in Durable Details
My clients have four active youngsters running around the house, so we took steps to make it durable. We chose an extra-wide vanity to catch the inevitable outside-the-sink splashes and the brick herringbone floor is both durable and forgiving of what is tracked in from the garage.
Tip #3: Spread the Love
Then, we continued those same design elements to the laundry room across the hall. The durable herringbone brick floor is perfect for a laundry room, and we used a coordinating bird and leaves fabric for the airy valances. Repeating the color theme and design elements in both areas was a must!
Tip #4: Don’t Be Afraid to Be Bold
Before we redesigned this client’s powder room, it was very plain with no storage for bathroom necessities. The rest of the home has a transitional European vibe, so we chose this wallpaper with a large repeat. It has a perfect background and attitude to complement the style of the house. Powder rooms are the perfect place to use a bold pattern. Think of it like your home’s version of a piece of statement jewelry or your favorite patterned scarf!
Tip #5: Put the ‘Fun’ in Functional
The powder room has a beautiful free-standing marble vanity, simple sconces and an oval mirror that adds to the European charm– but as mentioned before, it was lacking in storage options. Instead of a boring set of black drawers, we chose a black metal etagere for toiletries – it was the ‘piece de resistance’!
I hope you allow yourself to have some fun when creating your perfect powder room! Start with the perfect theme and color scheme, look for design options that offer stylish durability, and make it your own!
