My Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel: Part One
The thought of doing a kitchen remodel can be so overwhelming!
Our farmhouse is over 100 years old and, let me tell you, I had my work cut out for me!! But, like any room desperate for a renovation, the work on our kitchen remodel was worth it. Keep reading to learn about some of the tips I learned along the way to make the journey easier. Let’s get started!
Careful Planning is Essential
First, start by assessing what you do like. Even the roughest of rooms will likely have something that you want to keep. In my case, I liked the current size of the room and the pantry. The kitchen originally had 9′ ceilings so I had our contractor restore the original height after my parents had a lowered ceiling installed. Everything else though….that needed to go! So, let the gutting begin!
Create your wish list!
Now that you have found what you like and gotten rid of the rest, it is time to choose the rest. The more organized you are, the better. Here is my list!
- White cabinets with the upper cabinets extended to the ceiling
- Center island for food prep and entertaining
- Remove soffits
- New ceiling lighting
- Center the window with the sink
- Flip around the range with the refrigerator
- New flooring
- Paint casings and baseboards white and get a new white bead board wainscot
Don’t try and do it all on your own
Choose a contractor that aligns with your timeline and budget. Make sure to go over insurance coverage if that is relevant to you. Find out if permits are needed! Kitchens can be tricky, so meet with a designer at showrooms. This allows you to see their products and select a cabinet company. I am personally a fan of sketching how you would like your cabinetry to look. You can modify it as you go if needed, but it can be tremendously helpful to picture the end result!
Once you have selected your plumbing fixtures, advise your plumber if you will need gas hookup for appliances or not. I used this inspiration picture so my contractor knew what I was looking for in the built-in vent system!
Choose the details early on
It is never too early to decide on your color scheme, flooring, and paint colors. Creating a project board early on in the project keeps you focused! I like to think of them as a checklist in art form, checking off each element as you go!
